John Stearns Hayward died June 6, 1997, at home. He was surrounded by the love and music of his friends and family. John was born July 15, 1948, in New London, New Hampshire. He was the son of Elizabeth Hayward and the late Oliver Stoddard Hayward.

John was graduated from Hanover High School, New Hampshire, in 1966. He also attended the University of California at Davis and Tompkins Community College, where he studied English literature. For the past 17 years, John had been the bass player the Horse Flies. Prior to that, he played with the Correctone String Band. His day jobs included writing tutoring, clerking and stocking at Oasis Natural Grocery, and a number of positions in the libraries, the most recent of which was at Olin Library at Cornell University. John was a lover of literature, and spent many of his last days writing poetry in the wee hours of the morning.

He is survived by his loving wife, Marianne Marsh, two sons, Andrew Sanchirico Hayward and Joseph Marsh Hayward, and his mother, Elizabeth Hayward. Surviving also is a brother, Oliver Hayward, of Racine, Wisconsin, a sister, Susan Knapp, of Setauket, New York, his stepmother, Mary Hayward, of Alameda, California, two half-sisters, Mary Beth Hayward and Helen Mertzig, two half-brothers, Charles Hayward and Thomas Hayward, as well as aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

John is also survived by his first wife and dear friend, Christine Sanchirico, and by his fellow band members, Jeff Claus, Peter Dodge, Judy Hyman, Taki Masuko, and Richie Stearns.

A memorial service was held on July 15. Memorial donations may be directed to the Drop-In-Children's Center, 506 First Street, or to Hospicare, 172 East King Road, Ithaca NY, 14850.
